Common Pet Emergencies in Franklin, TN

Dr. Kaelyn Petras • July 15, 2023

Are you a pet owner? Do you live in or around the Franklin, Tennessee area? Are you concerned with local pet emergencies you should prepare for when it comes to the health and wellness of your own pet?

If any of this sounds like you, then you’ve come to the right place. In the article below, you’ll find a quick list of some of the most common pet emergencies you should be on the lookout for in Franklin . With the help of this guide, you can prepare for the risk of emergencies and enjoy more peace of mind with your pet at the same time.

Insect and Snake Bites and Stings

Franklin is home to a wide variety of insects and snakes, many of which are venomous. If your pet is bitten or stung by an insect or snake that is venomous, it is important to go to the emergency vet right away for proper treatment. If available, a picture of the snake can be of vital importance in forming a treatment plan. Some pets may also be allergic to bites and stings that come from insects whether they are venomous or not. If your pet is bitten or stung and experiences swelling of the face, snout, or neck, go to the emergency vet right away, as this is a sign of an allergic reaction.

Heatstroke

During the summer months, the temperatures outside climb very high in Franklin. Because of this, it is possible for pets to suffer from heatstroke . Any pet who overexerts herself outside on a very hot day, or any pet who is kept outside without access to shade and water, may be at risk.

Some pets who are born with a flat face (brachycephalic) can also overheat much faster than dogs with longer airways. Breeds who are brachycephalic include French bulldogs, English bulldogs, some pitbull terriers, pugs, boxers, and Boston terriers. We should take extra precautions for these dogs in the summer months to limit outdoor play, direct sun, or time in cars without direct fans/AC. If you think your pet is experiencing a heat stroke, please wet them with room temperature water (not ice water) and get them directly to the closest ER facility for care.

Additionally, pets who are left alone in a vehicle for any length of time on a hot day are at risk of heatstroke, even within just a few minutes. If the weather is mild outside, the temperatures inside a locked vehicle may climb too high in a very short amount of time as well.

Frostbite

Although Franklin is a typically warm place, it does get very cold during a small part of the winter. Since many pet owners are unprepared for the colder temperatures that occur at this time, frostbite is common in pets—especially in dogs who spend time outdoors.

If the temperature is below freezing and the weather is wet, you should not allow your dog to spend time unsupervised in the backyard. Instead, keep walks short and always walk your dog on a leash. Be sure to wipe her feet dry when she comes in from these walks, too.

Vehicle Trauma

Franklin is typically considered part of Nashville, and for this reason, it is a large and busy city area. With many cars moving through the streets of Franklin every day, it is always a risk for loose pets to come into contact with these vehicles and suffer injury.

If your pet gets away from you on a walk or escapes your home or yard, she is at risk of vehicle trauma. And if you let your pet roam freely, unsupervised, this increases her risk significantly. If your pet is struck by a vehicle, go to the emergency vet right away.

Animal Attacks

In the Franklin area, there are a lot of pets as well as stray animals. Unfortunately, this means that your pet is always at risk of coming into contact with an aggressive animal when spending time outdoors. Additionally, Franklin is home to a variety of wild animals that could potentially pose a threat as well.

If your pet is going to spend any time outside—even on a leash or in the backyard—make sure she is up to date on all of her vaccinations. This way, she will be at less of a risk of contracting serious, fatal diseases from animal attacks.

Ingestion of Poisons

As a part of the greater Nashville area, Franklin is a busy area of Tennessee. For this reason, pets are likely to come into contact with a variety of chemicals, especially from vehicles and household cleaning, when living in this area.

Of course, there are other potential poisonous hazards in this area too. Pets could risk ingesting parts of plants that may be harmful or even toxic to them, and it is always possible for pets to consume toxic human food or medication in the home, too.
