Common Pet Emergencies in Chandler, AZ

Daniel A. • August 21, 2023

Pet emergencies can take many forms. From illness to injury, there are a variety of reasons your pet may need emergency veterinary care. Below is a brief overview of some of the common pet emergencies seen in Chandler, AZ and the surrounding area. If you are ready to learn some more, you need to keep reading.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

This is a very common reason for a visit to the vet. There are many reasons our pets might experience vomiting and/or diarrhea, including but not limited to ingesting a toxic substance, eating foreign material, infection, or inflammatory conditions. Sometimes vomiting and/or diarrhea will resolve on its own but there are instances where more intensive treatment is needed. Untreated, vomiting and diarrhea can become very serious. If you’re concerned about your pet you should take them to be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Vehicle Trauma

Chandler and the surrounding area have many busy streets. If a dog or cat escapes the yard, leash, or house, there is a possibility they may be hit by a car. If your pet is struck by a vehicle they should be taken to the vet right away. Even if your pet seems okay they should be evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out internal injury, which does not always show signs immediately.

Snake Bites

Arizona is home to many different species of snakes, some of which are venomous. If your pet is bitten by a snake , they should be taken to a veterinarian right away. If you witnessed the bite and are able to take a picture of the snake this can be helpful in treatment decisions; however, be careful to not be bitten yourself. Do not go looking for the snake if you don’t see it. Treatment will vary based on the type of bite and the symptoms your pet is experiencing, which is why it is important to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Lacerations

Pets seem to be able to find ways to cut themselves badly even when you think your yard is safe. Severe lacerations can be hard to deal with at home and often will not heal without stitches. These are also the kinds of injuries that can lead to shock and to secondary infections. This is a really common reason to head to your emergency vet clinic to help your pet. These kinds of injuries can also be related to dog fights or cat fights and might even necessitate surgery to repair the injury.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a common pet emergency particularly in our hot summer months. Pets are at risk of heatstroke if they are left outdoors in hot weather or allowed to exert themselves on hot days. Pets left in the car can experience heat stroke even on mild weather days. Brachycephalic dog breeds (dogs with short muzzles such as bulldogs, pugs, boston terriers, and others) are at increased risk of heat stroke and should be monitored closely in warm weather. Additionally, there is a risk of burnt paw pads if our pets are walking outside on hot days.

Giving our pets outdoor time or going for walks early in the morning or later in the evening can help reduce the risk of heat stroke and burned paws. Some early signs of heat stroke include, excessive panting or increased rate of breathing, lethargy , and disorientation. If you have any concerns that your pet may be experiencing heat stroke please take them to the veterinarian right away as this can quickly progress to very serious illness in animals.
